Swallowing Problems Common Among Seniors

In a recent study, researchers found that swallowing problems are common among seniors and is accepted as part of the aging process. These seniors often do not seek treatment for their difficulties.

The research results were presented at the meeting of the American Academy of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery Foundation in Chicago and is to date, the largest single meeting of ear, nose and throat specialists in the world.

The study involved nearly 250 patients in their 80s. The patients studied all lived within two care home facilities. Of the patients studied, 20% experienced difficulty swallowing, voice hoarseness, and weakness or total loss of the voice. Almost 14% of the total patients also reported Pain when swallowing.

The researchers linked the effects of the difficulty swallowing to increased risk factors for Depression, social withdrawal and overall Anxiety. The patients all felt the condition was a part of their normal aging process.

While 50% of the patients studied clearly wanted to seek treatment for the condition, only 20% actually visited their doctor for help with the difficulty swallowing. Researchers noted that the difficulty swallowing depreciated the overall quality of life in patients.
