Women's Health News

From the time a woman goes through Menopause, here bone density decreases. The rate of decrease will vary from woman to woman and will often depend upon Exercise practice and whether or not the woman takes a calcium supplement every day or a hormone replacement therapy.

A new study, following about 1,200 women with the average age of 64 all presented with a lower than normal bone mass level. These women were followed for a year.

Denosumab is the drug tested in the study. One half of the study group received a 60 mg injection of the drug every six months and a weekly Placebo pill. The other half of the women received a placebo injection and took 70 mg of alendronate (Fosamax) each week. Both groups of women took 500 mg of Calcium and at minimum of 400 mg of Vitamin D every day.

At the conclusion of the year, the participants who received the denosumab injection showed an increase in bone density 3% greater than the half of the women taking Fosamax.

Women are urged to speak with a rheumatologist to determine the most effective form of treatment for their bone density case.
