Healthy Lifestyle Education For Parents Positively Effects Kids PDF Print E-mail

According to a small study, when parents are educated about a healthy lifestyle, they tend to teach their children their new healthy habits. Obese children are often encouraged to more move thanks to the education.

The study results came from a pilot program called Families for Health. The UK based program focused on educating parents about healthy lifestyle changes. The parents all had children who were overweight. The children tended to move more and lose more weight after their parents completed the healthy lifestyle education.

In addition to the positive benefits on the children, the parents tended to have better relationships with each other and reported a better feeling of mental well being.

This study was relatively small but the positive outcome led researchers to believe a larger scale study needs to take place to repeat the research results.

The program is unique in that parents were the focus of the education. The parents were educated about relationship skills and on positive ways to encourage healthy food changes in the household. The training sessions were held for 12 weeks. The children  in the families ranged in age from 7 years old to 13 years old.

At the conclusion of the training the children and the parents were more active, ate better and presented with a reduction in BMI.
