Photo therapy is currently used to treat several skin and mental conditions. Researchers have now linked the use of this therapy to a more youthful looking skin.

Photodynamic therapy, a combination of light therapy and light activated medications, offers a more youthful looking skin for study participants. Researchers studied the effects of photodynamic therapy on 25 people aged 54 to 83. The skin treated was a patch of sun damaged skin on the forearm.

Before treatment could begin, patients were tested for severity of the skin condition. After testing was complete, the photo sensitive topical medication, 5-aminolevulinic acid was applied to the forearm. After three hours the skin was washed, dried and treated with a photo laser. The study participants were then followed for six months.

The photo therapy increased the amount of skin growth protein, Ki67, 5 times. The epidermis appeared thicker and collagen producing enzyme levels also increased.

The study results show researchers that a combination therapy may provide the most benefit for restoring that youthful look and health the skin once had.
