According to new research, the cherry may be the perfect fruit to add to your diet in order to cut the risk of heart problems. Tart cherries are now thought to lower Cholesterol, reduce body Inflammation, and reduce body weight and body fat.

The studies are based upon rats being fed tart cherry powder. The rats were obese when the study began.

Within 12 weeks, the rat population had reduced their overall body fat percentage by 14% when compared to the control group of rats following the same diet minus the tart cherry powder. Specifically, the powder eating rats reduced tummy fat.

Researchers also noted significant lowering of cholesterol, inflammation and risk of heart disease (as a result of lowered body inflammation).

It is the reduction in inflammation that researchers focused on. With heart disease holding the number one killer spot in the United States, doctors are constantly trying to find new and better ways to reduce body inflammation.

While the results of the rat study are very positive, doctors and researchers will explore new and exciting ways to use tart cherries in health. Further studies will include the effect of tart cherries on diet, weight, inflammation and heart disease.

Consumers can find tart cherries in dried, frozen or juice form.
