New Link Found Between Caffeine Consumption and Risk of Miscarriage PDF Print E-mail
Women's Health News

Caffeine consumption and pregnancy risks have been studied for a very long period of time. While a clear link between caffeine and miscarriage was evident, researchers could not pinpoint the true risks levels without a control over pregnancy related symptoms that may have been clouding the outcome of previous studies. Once controlled, the Kaiser Permanente Division of Research was amazed by the results.

High doses of caffeine, meaning 200 mg or more a day, doubled a pregnant woman's chance of miscarriage. The study further revealed the source of the caffeine was a moot factor. Whether the caffeine originated from coffee, tea, soda or hot chocolate, the results were the same.

Caffeine enters the female body and passes straight through the placenta into the Fetus. unable to metabolize the caffeine due to the immaturity of the Metabolic system, the unborn fetus is left with higher levels of caffeine in their body for a prolonged period of time. It is unclear why the miscarriage rates are so high, but some researchers believe cell development and placental blood flow may be damaged by the daily high doses of caffeine.

Doctors are warning women to stay away from caffeine of any kind during pregnancy. If early morning energy is needed, Exercise, healthy snacks and stretching are suggested. Women who are pregnant should get significant levels of sleep, as well. A minimum of seven to nine hours of sleep a night is recommended.
