Patients who suffer from high LDL (bad Cholesterol) and low HDL (good cholesterol), as well as, triglyceride levels have often been left with taking more than one medication to solve the problems they are having. Where one medication worked wonderfully at lowering the patient's LDL levels, it may do nothing to raise the good cholesterol or HDL levels. Now, thanks to a little bit of combination, all of the problems associated with cholesterol levels and triglyceride levels may be treatable with one prescription
This new medication is owed to a group of researchers and doctors who have combined the best medications fro each individual problem into one medication for all of the problems. The new drug called Simcor, is a combination of simvastatin and Niaspan. Simvastatin is a medication that has been approved by the FDA for the treatment of high LDL levels in the blood. Niaspan, on the other hand, has been approved by the FDA to treat HDL levels and triglycerides that are not falling within healthy limits.
The combination of these two medications leads researchers to believe that taking the two separate medications may not be needed much longer. These same feelings were expressed by the creators of Vytorin, another combination cholesterol drug. With no long term studies to back up the true effects of these medications on
Heart attack and deaths associated with cholesterol related problems, there is not likely to be an answer for many years.
The creators of Simcor understand the need for a long term study and are currently testing the long term effects of Simcor against the individual effects of simvastatin and Niaspan. The study is expected to be completed in 2011.
