The skin of the lip is one of the most fragile on the body and this fragility lends the lips to an increased chance of contracting certain forms of cancer.
According to new studies surrounding the use of shiny lip balms and glosses, its the shine may attract the harmful ultraviolet rays from the sun and thus increase the risk of certain types of skin cancer. Researchers have noted that the inclusion of sunscreen as a base may reduce this risk. Sunblock should be applied under lipsticks and glosses used and should have a SPF rating of 30 or better. The sunblock should be reapplied throughout the day under the lipstick or gloss for increased protection and risk reduction.
Always check for changes in lip color on a regular basis as a self prevention technique for recognizing the chance of skin cancer of the lips. If the lips, or part of the lips, turns white or opaque, a dermatologist should be notified for further diagnosis and possible treatment. Peeling and flaky that is persistent and localized to one area of the lips may be another sign of skin cancer in the lip region of the face.
