A common method of birth control, Intrauterine Device or IUD, is getting attention as a possible aid in the reduction of some forms of cancer. Endometrial cancer, or cancer of the Uterus, may be reduced in patients who choose an IUD as their method of birth control.
In many cases, doctors simply do not remember the effects of an IUD on endometriosis. When used as a means of birth control, an IUD also can help to treat the symptoms associated with endometriosis.
The study results found that a 40% reduction in endometrial cancers were found in patients who had chosen the IUD. These results are very similar to the found in patients using the more utilized oral contraceptives, but many doctors are naive to the fact that IUDs offer this comparable protection.
There are currently two forms of IUD being used by gynecologists. The first is a small device inserted into the uterus that releases a small amount of progesterone preventing the fertilization of the egg. The second, uses the same method of conception prevention, but copper is released instead of progesterone.
While women of the United States only use IUDs in 2% of their contraceptive choices, worldwide, the use of IUDs is clearly the most popular choice in birth control.
