Open colorectal Cancer surgery is not routinely performed due to concerns that some of the Tumor may be left behind. According to a new report, advancements in the laparoscopic technique “keyhole surgery” have led to results as successful as the more commonly used open surgery.
Conventional colorectal cancer surgery and keyhole surgery have been studied at the Namsos Hospital in Norway by a team lead by Dr. Ester Kuhry which concluded that both surgical procedures carried nearly the same complications. Long term results were evaluated of the 3345 patients involved in 12 Clinical trials.
The studies also concluded that neither recurrences at the point of origination nor spreading elsewhere in the body differed between the laparoscopic keyhole surgery and open surgery. Researchers also noted that the mortality rate was about the same for both approaches.
In conclusion, investigators announced that the keyhole surgery is equal to open surgery in terms of rate of survival. It is expected that the procedure will now be a choice for colon cancer patients with access to surgeons proficient in laparoscopic colon surgery.
