In the United States 17% of teens are fighting weight problems and are considered to be overweight. A study, presented by Dr. Roberto Fogel, of the Hospital de Clinicas Caracas, in Venezuela, recently presented his results of his pilot investigation of 12 obese teens who received a new procedure related to gastric bypass surgery that may be gentler on the teenage body. This new procedure (termed endoluminal vertical gastroplasty or EVG) medically reduces the overall volume of the Stomach through a procedure performed orally where the doctor will insert a scope down the throat and a needle with stitches attached.
This procedure, which takes a small amount of time, leaves only a 1 to ½ hour recovery time post surgery. The effect of the surgery is a feeling of fullness after consuming smaller amounts of food.
The Body Mass Index (or BMI, a measure of body fat based on height and weight) of patients was reduced an average of 10.3 from a pre-surgery BMI of 38.1 to a post surgery BMI of 27.8. Obesity is determined by having a BMI of 30 or larger. (see chart below)
