Lipitor, a drug once only prescribed for lowering Cholesterol, may also show promise for reducing the risk of heart related problems after bypass surgery.

Patients in a study group were given 80 milligrams of Lipitor rather than the normal 10 milligrams after undergoing Heart bypass surgery and of the 4,600+ patients a reduction in heart related incidences after surgery fell by more than 25%.

After their heart bypass surgery, random patients were prescribed higher than normal dosages of Lipitor and were then observed for nearly 5 years. At the conclusion of the study, the LDL (aka bad cholesterol levels) in the patient receiving the 80 milligram doses were significantly lower than those patients who received the standard 10 milligram dosage.

The study also found that only 9.7% of those patients taking the higher levels of Lipitor suffered from major heart related events after their surgery including, cardiac death, Heart attack, resuscitated cardiac arrest or Stroke. Of the patients taking the lower dose, 13% suffered from one or more of the same set of heart related events. Additionally, repeat heart bypass surgeries and angioplasties were lowered by 4.6% for the patients who were prescribed the higher dosages of Lipitor.
