Summertime brings with it a lot of fun and excitement, but the excitement can be too much when you end up in the emergency room of your local hospital. There are many injuries and illnesses that can be avoided with a few simple precautions in the summer months so that you can stay healthy, happy, and out of the hospital.
One of the major reasons that people end up in the hospital over the summer is because of being overheated. Children and adults alike can get overheated in the summer sun because there are playing and exercising outside To avoid feeling sick, you will want to drink plenty of waters or beverages that contain electrolytes. This will help to replenish all of the hydration that you are losing while you are outside in the sun, sweating and working out.
Also, if you want to avoid being overheated, you should not drink alcohol. Alcohol will dehydrate you faster because it makes your body feel cooler than it actually it. It could make you believe that you can stay outside longer than you should.
Pools and beaches are another concern for people who want to stay out of the ER this summer. Never leave children unattended around water. Many summer injuries and deaths to children will happen because they were left unattended in a pool or around an area where they could access the water. Also, you should avoid swimming at night. Most pools do not have the proper lighting in order to safely swim, so make sure you can get out of the pool before the sun goes down.
Diving into to water, unless you are specifically in a diving pool, should also be avoided. Any body of water less than nine feet deep is a danger to divers. Hitting the bottom can cause neck and Spinal cord injuries. Insect bites are another thing that is well associated with summer. While they are annoying, they can be dangerous too. When you can an insect bite, remember not to scratch it. This will make you more susceptible to staph infections, some of which are antibiotic resistant. Instead of scratching at the bite, an anti-itch cream should be applied to the bite.
If you take any kind of medication, such as Insulin or blood pressure medication, you will want to remember to bring it with you on all trips that you can away from home during the summer.
The last concern for summer ailments that will put you in the hospital is food. Never eat food that has been left out in the sun or the heat. These foods have a chance of making you sick. Once everyone is finished eating, any food left over should be covered and kept cool. If food is not stored properly, it can be a breeding ground for Bacteria that can put you in the hospital with various types of food poisoning.
If you play it smart in the summer time, you will be able to have a great time and avoid those unnecessary ER visits.
