Effective Management of Your Child’s Asthma

While asthma is a chronic condition that may persist through adulthood, it can be effectively managed at home. Knowing the right things to do as well as how and when to do these things play a vital role in this aspect. When your child is diagnosed with asthma, make sure you have a proper understanding of the condition in order to effectively manage his or her condition.

To help prevent an asthmatic attack or control the symptoms of asthma symptoms, the American Lung Association has the following recommendations:

Avoid known attack triggers

Pollen, dust, industrial chemicals, cigarette smoke and the like can trigger an asthmatic attack. It can also be triggered by engaging in a strenuous exercise or physical activity. As a parent of an asthmatic child, you should reduce your child’s exposure to these things that can trigger an attack.

Ask your child’s doctor regarding asthma medications

Asthma drug therapy involves the use of two kinds of medicines — quick-relief drugs to treat symptoms and long-term control drugs to prevent symptoms. Know the right medications to give your child — either to treat symptoms or prevent an attack. You should also learn the drugs’ possible side effects, proper administration, as well as their interactions with other medicines (if any).

Consider allergy shots

The efficacy of these shots in managing asthma is still being investigated, but their effectiveness in preventing allergic reactions associated with asthma symptoms has been proven. So to control allergic reactions that can trigger an asthmatic attack, you may discuss with your child’s doctor the benefits of allergy shots for your child.

Educate the entire family regarding proper management of asthma.

Knowing the triggers of an asthmatic attack and what to do during an attack is very important to effectively prevent or manage the condition. Each responsible family member should also learn how to properly administer prescribed drugs, and how to use inhalers or nebulizers. If your asthmatic child is old enough to follow simple instructions, make sure that he or she knows this basic information regarding asthma.

As a parent of an asthmatic child, avoid becoming overwhelmed by your child’s condition. With sufficient knowledge regarding prevention and treatment of asthma, you should be able to manage it effectively at home. These preventive measures and therapeutic approaches are important in the effective management of your child’s asthma.
